MOBILE VOTING COMES TO BAYFAIR CENTER ON OCTOBER 17
Voters Invited to Conveniently Cast Ballots Before November 7
ALAMEDA, Calif. – (October 12, 2006) Exercise your democratic rights while doing a little afternoon shopping! Later this month, voters in Alameda County will be able to cast their ballots for the November 7 General Election while going about their business – at the mall, at school or during the weekday commute.
These seemingly implausible scenarios are made possible by the county’s new "mobile voting unit,’’ which will take Democracy to the voters by setting up temporary polling places at hubs of local activity.
The mobile voting unit will be coming to BayFair Center in San Leandro on Tuesday, October 17.
Voting machines will be available for voters in Bayfair’s Center Court area from noon to 8 p.m.
The mobile voting unit brings a new twist to the Early Voting program that the Alameda County Registrar of Voters has been conducting for several years, mostly at city halls throughout Alameda County.
By opening these select polling places during the month before Election Day, Alameda County seeks to make voting more convenient for its residents and to bolster the overall turnout for its elections.
Still, the County’s Early Voting program has in the past required initiative on the part of the voter, by asking them to take the time to go to the nearest Early Voting site.
"By bringing voting to where the people are, we hope to attract voters who are acting more on impulse,’’ said Dave Macdonald, Acting Registrar of Voters for Alameda County. "While they’re out shopping, going to class or heading for the train, they just might decide there’s no better time than the present to get their voting done.’’
Bayfair is a traditional mix, enclosed, full service shopping center designed to serve the diverse communities surrounding the center’s East Bay location. Madison Marquette manages and owns the property and is currently in the process of adding additional stores and restaurants. Bayfair is located at 15555 East 14th Street in San Leandro, Calif.
